A seminar and informative meeting was held in Astakos, on Saturday 12th November 2016 for the pilot project “Measures to support small scale fisheries in the EU Mediterranean waters” (MARE/2014/04 – SI2.723876) in Greece, Cyprus and Malta.
The meeting was organized by APC s.a. and was conducted by Mr Nikos Anagnopoulos, President and CEO of APC s.a. and participated more than 50 small scale fishermen from the area and representatives for Professional Fishermen Associations based in Meganisi, Zakynthos, Lefkas and also representatives from the Directorate General for Regional Rural Economy and Veterinary of the Regional Unit of Aetoloakarnania.
APC s.a. staff presented the objectives and the progress of the project. Also presentations were given by Mrs Alkistis Parpoura, Head of the Fisheries Department Regional Unit of Aetoloakarnania, in relation to small scale fishing in the local community and by Mrs Marina Petrou, Director, Directorate General of Sustainable Fisheries, in relation to funding opportunities for small scale fishermen from the Operational Programme 2014-2020.
The representatives of small scale fishermen presented their views and the main problems discussed were: representation of small scale fishermen in legal bodies, licensing of professional fishermen, overfishing, recreational fishing, landings and climate change.
All participants agreed that there is a need for Greek fishermen to get organized at regional and national level in order to participate in the decision making process. Main obstacles are the national legislative framework related to Fishermen Associations and the lack of funding to cover the expenses for the participation in meetings in the EU bodies. A tool that can assist fishermen is the site of the project (http://www.eastmedfishers.eu).
